A week of music and celebration throughout New York City culminates tonight on the Great Lawn in Central Park for “We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert.”
The star-studded event featuring Bruce Springsteen, Queens-natives Paul Simon and LL Cool J, and Brooklyn’s own Barry Manilow, as well as Patti Smith, Jennifer Hudson and Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli caps off NYC Homecoming week, a citywide celebration of the city’s recovery during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Produced by legendary music executive Clive Davis and LiveNationArtists, Central Park Conservancy President and CEO Betsy Smith addressed the complicated process of transforming the Great Lawn into a 60,000 capacity venue by stating: “By the time you bring in the stage and load it in, set it up and protect the property, set up the barricades and it comes down more quickly than it goes up.” And confirming that all attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19, she added “They have to show proof of vaccination when they show their ticket”
Perhaps no one’s more excited about tonight’s gala than Clive Davis, a native New Yorker who grew up in Crown Heights, who said that the concert concept started with a call from the mayor, subsequent to which said he immediately replied “yes” and went about approaching many of the artists he has worked with over the years.
Said Davis: “I wanted and chose the real deal, those artists that can really stir your soul, and that’s the objective, I’m not going to hype it, it speaks for itself.” “There’s nothing like music to inspire, to affect, to really just penetrate the soul.”
