During the second part of his virtual Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday night, Clive Davis addressed something he never talked about before : his favorite song of all time.
It’s a question Sony Music’s chief creative officer says he’s been asked for years but has always avoided answering, the legendary record man said he actually has two favorite songs: “The Boxer” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, both of which were written and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel.
Given that Paul Simon was one of the many celebrities who joined Davis for an interview during the six-hour marathon event, the timing of his reveal was fortuitous. On the East Coast, the gala ended so late, in fact, that some viewers changed into their pajamas but remained logged on so as not to miss the celebrity entourage.
Davis’s annual Pre-Grammy gala, which is usually held the night before the Grammy Awards, went online in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Davis wanted to split the celebration in two . The first iteration, which benefited MusiCares, took place on Jan. 30, but the Grammys were postponed to March 14. Then, on March 13 — the night before the rescheduled Grammys — the second edition, benefiting the Grammy Museum, was set to take place, but Davis was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy and had to postpone the event until May 15. Saturday nights event followed the same format as did the first on Jan. 30: a fully recovered Davis showcased what he considered to be some of the greatest live shows of all time, interspersed with interviews with some of the artists in attendance.
