Zara Larsson Rejects Grammy Category

Because the Swedish singer/songwriter does not consider herself a new artist – having released five LPs – despite achieving a breakthrough in the U.S. with her latest record, Midnight Sun, Zara Larsson will not participate in the 2027 Best New Artist Grammy category.

Speaking with Perfect Magazine, the 28-year old musician said that her former record label, which she left earlier this summer before signing with a new one, had been considering submitting her for the Best New Artist category at the 2027 Grammys.

“I was speaking to my former label about this, and they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to see if we can put you in Best New Artist for the Grammys.’ And I’m like, I don’t even want that.” “That would downplay the 13 years of me being an artist. I’m not a new artist.”

Having released music for more than ten years, Larsson explained that she would prefer to be described as a “breakthrough” artist, adding:

“But that’s why I like ‘breakthrough.” “It feels like the whole world is looking at me at the same time. Before, this song was successful over here, and another song a year later was successful over there.” “Now it feels like it’s all coming together quite nicely.”

Though the Scandinavian-born songstress has recognized success throughout her career, it was the Midnight Sun album that took her to a while new level.

In November of 2025, Zara received her first-ever Grammy nomination for her ‘Midnight Sun’ single, which was nominated for Best Dance Pop Recording. As a result, she would not be eligible for the Best New Artist category regardless.
