Several weeks after dropping “Shirt,” on her 33rd birthday SZA surprised fans with a video that appears to be the first taste of a forthcoming project.
In the visualizer, backed by a soft piano and ethereal sound, the superstar singer/songwriter (born Solána Imani Rowe) is posing in a bikini within a circle of green fire as she caresses her body and sings “I dont want nobody calling me anything but No. 1.” “Know I got problems, I don’t know how to take losses/Even when, even when they are lost causes.”
As SZA’s lyrics address “pissin’ you off just to get off” and people “acting like bottom feeders,” the video combines the effervescent flames with images of the artist pouring a fluorescent blue liquid over her nude body. The video closes with her approaching a dark ocean. “Not trying to fight about it,” she sings over an angelic harmony before the music abruptly ends and morse code (…—…) appears onscreen. (It means S.O.S.)
Taking to her Instagram account, SZA wrote, “Happy birthday to me. Clock starts now.”
In an October interview, Rowe spoke about her music-making progress, stating that it was “all over the place” and that she’s in no rushed to release it, stating “I have no idea what it sounds like to anybody else.” “I really don’t know. It’s so bizarre. It’s weird that I can’t put my finger on it. It’s a little bit of everything. It’s a little aggressive.” “Some parts are incredibly soft. Some of them are ballads. I don’t know. It’s all over the place. It’s just where my heart is.”
