Sean Ono Lennon has opened up about his parents’ love and marriage.
The son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is working to preserve their musical legacy by overseeing the release of a special box set of John’s 1973 album, Mind Games.
“The whole album is about my mom,” Sean, 49, told People magazine.
“They’re mostly love songs about her. My dad declared to the world that ‘John and Yoko’ were one word.”
When John was ready to record the album, the couple was in the midst of a storm of controversy over their political activism and antiwar stance, with then-President Richard Nixon even concocting false drug charges to have them both deported from the US.
“The FBI were tailing them and tapping their phones,” Sean shared. “Nixon was trying to deport them. It was really terrifying.”
And while the pair had a tumultuous relationship that included an 18-month split that began the same year Mind Games was released, Sean said his parents never lost their passion for one another.
“I think he always had his heart set on her. He was so in love with her,” he said. “They had a legendary love and I think that this album is infused with that love. You can hear it.”
