Releasing her forthcoming album Algorithm on September 4, Natalie Imbruglia is preparing for a full-blown comeback with a version of herself they’ve not yet seen.
Having dominated the late 1990s and early 2000s with thus hits as ‘Torn,’ the 51-year old singer/songwriter returns to the music fray with a project she says was born out of chaos, creativity and the toughest mental-health battle of her life.
In the trenches with her from day one, Imbruglia says she created the LP with a tight crew of collaborators – including MyRiot, David Sneddon, Fraser T Smith, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Anu Pillai, Tobie Tripp, Mark Crew, and Dan Priddy – adding:
“On this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song.” “I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off.” “[Fraser] T [Smith] his was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record.” “It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”
In advance of the full length, the recently dropped lead single ‘Upside Down,’ is a clear reflection of the Australian artist’s struggle – a bright pop track built on the moment she realized she couldn’t simply “power through” anymore.
“The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it.” “In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support,” stated Natalie.
The artist’s first full length in five years, following Firebird in 2021, the songstress is ready to perform live, confirming festival dates throughout England – including App-Fest, Replay, In It Together and Lazydays – along with dates in Spain, Sweden and Mexico.
