Diagnosed with breast cancer in May of 2005 and having undergone a lumpectomy and chemotherapy treatment, Kylie Minogue recently revealed she secretly battled the disease for a second time some five years ago.
While the Australian-born superstar went public with her first health scare, in the just released KYLIE documentary, the 57-year old hitmaker announced that she was diagnosed with cancer again in early 2021.
“I was able to keep that to myself… Not like the first time,” she recalled, referencing the huge amount of media attention at the time. “Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well. Hey, who knows what’s around the corner, but pop music nurtures me… my passion for music is greater than ever.”
Stating that she didn’t feel comfortable sharing her health crisis with fans, particularly after the success of her 2023 single ‘Padam Padam,’ the iconic songstress said:
“I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person.” “I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point. Padam Padam opened so many doors for me, but on the inside, I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life. And I really just wanted to say what happened so I can let go of it. I’d sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, ‘Now’s the time,’ but I kept it to myself.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Minogue explained that the song ‘Story’ from her sixteenth studio LP, Tension, was about that particular time in her life. “I needed to have something that marked that time,” she added, without divulging any further details about her health.
KYLIE, the three-part series, is now streaming via Netflix.
