Jesse Ware Delivers Disco-Tinged ‘Free Yourself’: Look + Listen

On Tuesday (7.19,) Jessie Ware paid homage to the dance floor with the release of her disco/house-influenced single “Free Yourself.”

Reminiscent of the early-80s club resurgence championed by Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, Ware sings “Why don’t you please yourself? If it feels so good, then don’t you stop” atop the funky chorus, produced by Stuart Price and Clarence Coffee, Jr., who also worked with Lipa on her second full length.

About her new single, Ware stated “‘Free Yourself’ is the beginning of a new era for me.” “I’m so excited for people to have this song for the end of their summer; to dance, to feel no inhibitions, and to feel joyful because that’s how I’ve been feeling recently being able to tour again and sing again.”

After collaborating with Kylie Minogue on “Kiss of Life” in 2021, “Free Yourself” is Jesse’s first song of the year and it’s the first taste of her fifth full length that follows her What’s Your Pleasure? album (2020.)

A Rolling Stone review of her last LP said “It feels timeless more in its emotionality and drama than even in the sound itself, which stays firmly strapped to a bygone era,” read “Her nostalgia feels like a proper tribute, mostly because it digs so deep to the core.”
