Addressing his health-related issues due to years of drumming, Phil Collins discusses what the toll of playing the instrument has done to his body.
Considered by many to be one of the greatest drummers of all time, the now 73-year-old legendary musician spoke to Drumeo about what playing the drums have done to his hands, legs and body.
In Phil Collins: Drummer First, the recently released documentary features the star explaining how he’s still adjusting to being unable to perform.
“If I can’t do what I did as well as I did it, I’d rather relax and not do anything.” “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’ll have a crack of it. But I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.” “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit.” “I’ve spent all my life playing drums. To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock” said Collins.
Sharing additional information about his father, Phil’s son Nic Collins is also featured in the documentary and confirmed that his dad required a “big surgery on his neck that stemmed from all those years playing drums and bad posture,” adding that the drum master suffered drop-foot, a condition where “one of his feet has no sensation,” leaving him with the need to use a cane.
