In the new music video for “Count Me Out,” Kendrick Lamar drills down on his feelings with iconic actress Helen Mirren.
Directed by the superstar rapper’s frequent collaborator, Dave Free, Dame Mirren portrays Lamar’s therapist in the latest Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers visual, which opens mid-therapy session.
After Kendrick shares a story about stealing a woman’s parking spot, he admits to sending a late-night text to his analyst, writing “I feel like I’m fallen,” subsequent to which he reveals his emotions.
Throughout “Count Me Out,” a video montage rolls, mixing scenes from everyday life with more abstract considerations of fame, power, and messianic burdens and doubt. The clip closes with Lamar turning his back on Mirren as an angel rests a hand on his shoulder.
Marking his first proper studio effort since 2017’s Damn, Lamar first released Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers in May and was #11 on Rolling Stone’s 100 best albums of the year, and #7 on our list of the 25 best hip-hop records of 2022.
