In his music video for “Rodeo Dr,” Gunna cruises down the Los Angeles freeway in an extremely familiar and conspicuous white Ford Bronco.
Directed by Spike Jordan, the clip features imagery of Gunna’s involvement in the YSL gang case, his decision to take a best-interest plea, and the subsequent backlash he’s faced. The majority of the video is a recreation of the infamous O.J. Simpson Bronco chase, with the rapper (born Sergio Giavanni Kitchens) seated in the backseat of the SUV while reporters and fans chase him down the freeway.
“Rodeo Dr” is just one of several songs on Gunna’s recent album, A Gift and a Curse, that deals with the YSL gang case and the musician’s plea deal. In one song, he addresses those who’ve been “claiming I ratted,” and in another release, “I Was Just Thinking,” Gunna seems to reject the allegations that he snitched in a direct message to Young Thug, who was also arrested in the YSL gang case and remains in jail awaiting trial.
Gunna’s first major project since leaving jail last December, A Gift and a Curse dropped in June and the best-interest plea Gunna took meant the artist got to maintain his innocence while accepting the repercussions of a guilty verdict. Though he neither cooperated with the prosecution nor testified against any co-defendants, the rapper faced criticism for taking the deal from both fans and peers.
In support of A Gift and a Curse, Gunna has scheduled two shows for this fall, on 9.09 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and on 9.28 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
