Eminem‘s mother Debbie Nelson has passed away at the age 69.
A representative for the superstar rapper/writer confirmed that Nelson died on Monday (12.02) in St. Joseph, Missouri following a battle with advanced lung cancer.
Nelson’s battle with the illness was first reported in September, but neither she nor her son (born Marshall Mathers III,) confirmed the news.
Having previously accused her of being abusive and neglectful throughout his life, Eminem had a turbulent relationship with his mother.
The now 52-year old award winning musician addressed his mother’s behavior on several songs, including his 2002 release ‘Cleanin’ Out My Closet,’ yet in his 2013 ‘Headlights,’ the artist apologized to her for criticizing Debbie in his previous music.
The mother-son relationship was additionally trained when Nelson sued her son for defamation in 1999 and when she published her tell-all memoir My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem in 2007.
In 2022, Nelson made an attempt to reconcile with her Eminem when she congratulated him on his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Eminem’s estranged father, Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., died at the age of 67 in 2019.
