Elton John Celebrates 35 Years Sober

Posting a picture of the cards and flowers he received from his close friends and family, on Tuesday (7.29,) Elton John took to social media in celebration of his three and half decades of sobriety.

In addition to the cards and flowers, the iconic singer/songwriter received two framed balloon drawings, love hearts and swirls with the words “Happy sobriety” and “So proud of you!” from his sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, who wished him a “happy 35th birthday.”

Along with with praying and heart emojis, the 78-year-old wrote, “Grateful for all the love on my sobriety birthday,” in the Instagram caption.

Retired tennis champion and Elton’s close friend, Billie Jean King congratulated him in the comments, writing, “So proud of you, always,” and Christina Perri left six red heart emojis.

Sir Elton has been candid about his addiction to drugs and alcohol between the 1970s and 1980s, and sober since 1990, the Grammy award winner reflected on those days in an interview with Time magazine in December, stating:

“You make terrible decisions on drugs.” “I wanted love so badly, I’d just take hostages. I’d see someone I liked and spend three or four months together, and then they would resent me because they had nothing in their life apart from me. It really upsets me, thinking back on how many people I probably hurt.”
