Like the original 1988 comedy, Coming to America, its 2021 sequel Coming 2 America, features its share of memorable musical moments. Giving fans a healthy dose of reworked classics, the musical tapestry of the film includes cameo appearances by Gladys Knight, Salt n Pepa, En Vogue and more.
During one of the films major dance productions En Vogue turned “Whatta Man?” into “Whatta King” and Gladys Knight reframed her 1973 classic “Midnight Train to Georgia” into “Midnight Train to Zamunda.”
Film makers worked with Def Jam Records on the film’s soundtrack to include John Legend, Tiwa Savage and Big Sean and an accompanying second album, called “Rhythms of Zamunda,” came together in honor of the Amazon Prime movie. “It’s a concept record with African-based music,” said Director Craig Brewer (who worked with Eddie Murphy on Dolomite.) “Def Jam understood the importance of the film and the idea of coming up with two soundtracks.”
