During his live on Radio X’s The Chris Moyles Show, Boy George confirmed his interest in crafting a future Eurovision Song Contest entry for the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on his recent experience representing San Marino in the global competition, the Culture Club frontman expressed a desire to pen the British track, stating, “Well, I’d like to write the British entry. That would be something I would like to do. That’s something I would like to do, so I’m putting it out in there.”
Addressing his career in the international musical spotlight, host Chris Moyles asked the superstar singer/songwriter “Did you enjoy the circus that was Eurovision?” to which Boy George responded, “I absolutely did, you know. I wanted to go, and it was really mad. I mean, I would have liked to have got through to the final to see whether we got any of the nul points, or whatever. Because that’s what you go for! I want to find out – would we have got any points?”
Critiquing the current tournament mechanics, the UK musician offered up what he deemed “a little bit controversial” feedback regarding the structural advantages given to the contest’s major financial contributors, adding “If five countries can get into the show without any process, how’s that a competition? Just saying!” he noted, later emphasizing, “I think it’s weird that it’s not an even playing field, you know?”
When the show’s host mentioned the immense scale of the declaration, saying, “I think that’s massive that you say, ‘I’ll do it, I’ll do the UK entry,’” the artist (born George Alan O’Dowd) questioned why the nation frequently struggles to secure points on the grand stage. “Because I think, also, I don’t know why we’re so unpopular.”. Defending the country’s rich musical heritage, he concluded, “Come on, we’ve given the world such great music! We’re known for our great music!”
