At the opening night of her husband Jay-Z’s tour, on Friday (7.10) Beyoncé and Blue Ivy made a surprise appearance.
Launching his three-night residency at New York’s Yankee Stadium with a string of special guests – including his wife, their 14-year-old daughter Blue Ivy, former rival Nas, and Alicia Keys – Beyonce’s surprise moment came when she stepped on stage to sing Mary J. Blige’s vocal part on ‘Can’t Knock the Hustle.’
As her performance came to a close, Jay quipped “Oh she can sing” with Beyoncé responding “Give it up for my baby,” and at the end of his 1996 hit ‘Feelin’ It,’ Blue Ivy joined her dad for the piano solo.
To wild audience applause – including the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Megan Thee Stallion and LeBron James – the superstar rapper said “Make some noise for the legendary Blue Ivy Carter.”
Jay-Z previously declared Blue Ivy a “crazy pianist,” and, in interview with GQ magazine, he said:
“She won’t let us get her a teacher. She doesn’t want it to be a job. But she has perfect pitch. If she hears a song, she’ll be like ‘Play it again’ and then she’ll teach herself.” “That’s just talent. She doesn’t work at that. She worked at this, and it makes me proud that she fought for something that she really wanted to do.” “I don’t think we’re going to be able to get her off that stage now.”
In addition to his daughter, former rap rival Nas joined the superstar (born Shawn Carter) for a mash-up of ‘Dead Presidents’ and ‘New York State of Mind,’ while Jay also reunited with Memphis Bleek and Jas-O for ‘Coming of Age’ and ‘Bring It On’ respectively.
One of the night’s biggest moments was when Alicia Keys joined Jay-Z on their chart-topping single ‘Empire State of Mind.’
