Ashlee Simpson Recalls SNL Bullying Episode

Following her failed lip-sync attempt on Saturday Night Live in 2004, Ashlee Simpson recalled the subsequent “insane” bullying she subsequently experienced.

On Thursday (8.21,) while discussing the peaks and valleys of her career during an appearance on the Pod Meets World podcast, the show’s co-host Danielle Fishel asked Jessica’s younger sister about the incident that saw the singer become the first musician to walk out of a live SNL gig.

At the ago of 20, Ashlee was blind-sided when her pre-recorded ‘Pieces of Me’ single began playing before she even opened her mouth. The decision to lip-sync sparked a huge backlash against Simpson, who later explained an acid reflux flare-up had affected her voice.

Admitting she’s spent years trying to make up for the unfortunate incident, the now 41-year old said:

“I think it’s a different era … I think during that time, I mean, the bullying was insane.” “But then my whole life, I had to tell people, ‘Oh, but I perform every night.’ My fans know. I had to know that in my heart.” “Yes, I’ve had ups and downs just like every other human,” said the now 40-year old.

Discussing the tougher moments of her life, Ashlee recalled the now 21-year old release of her debut album Autobiography. Referring to the record as the “diary of my life”, she revealed that a toxic relationship inspired some of her lyrics, adding “I had a boyfriend that was like, ‘You look fat, you need to get on the treadmill!’,” before she laughed and added her first thought was, “Get ready for what I’m about to say.”
