Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Downward Spiral’ Turns 30

Three decades since its original release, Trent Reznor is celebrating ‘The Downward Spiral’.

On the 30th anniversary of The Nine Inch Nails album that dropped on March 8, 1994, the band’s front man revisited the project and shared his thoughts via social media, writing:

“SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME LOOKING BACKWARDS FEELS DANGEROUS TO ME, BUT THIS DAY ON THE CALENDAR CAUGHT MY ATTENTION. HAS IT REALLY BEEN THAT LONG, OLD FRIEND?” “I JUST SPENT AN HOUR LISTENING TO THIS TIME CAPSULE OF WHAT 28 YEAR OLD ME HAD TO SAY, AND IT STILL EXCITES ME AND BREAKS MY HEART.” “BE KIND TO YOURSELVES. HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON. TR 3.8.24.”

Now 58 years old and not wanting to be away from his family, in 2023 Reznor insisted that he had no plans to ever tour again, telling Rick Ross’ podcast ‘Tetragrammaton’: “I don’t want to be away from my kids. I don’t want to miss their lives to go do a thing that I’m grateful to be able to do, and I’m appreciative that you’re here to see it, but I’ve done it a lot, you know?”

Admitting that he struggles with songwriting, Trent stated “To me, the hardest thing is the songwriting. Having something to say, something to say with truth, that has reason to exist rather than just a thing.” “It really reminded me of the art of writing a well-crafted song — I teared up listening to a Dua Lipa track. Because it was just a really well-done piece of music, you know? It was clever. It felt good.” “It’s a difficult thing to do. I don’t know how to do that. When I’m trying to think of what to say, I’m saying it from the unvarnished me. And that requires me thinking about who I am and where my position is now and all of that together becomes something that feels the stakes are higher.”
