Included in the short list of 2023 candidates – including King Charles III, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hollywood strikers and Barbie – Taylor Swift has been named Time magazine’s ‘Person of the Year.’
Justifying the legendary periodical’s choice, on Wednesday (12.07,) the magazine’s Editor in Chief, Sam Jacobs told the Today Show “Picking one person who represents the eight billion people on the planet is no easy task. We picked a choice that represents joy. Someone who’s bringing light to the world. She was like weather, she was everywhere.”
In a rare interview with Time, the superstar singer/songwriter said “This is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been.”
Time awards the Person of the Year title to “the individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world throughout the previous 12 months”.
Now 33 years old, Swift has enjoyed a magnificent year with her inordinately successful Eras Tour launching the musician into billionaire status, releasing the fastest-selling record of 2023 (the re-recording of her 2014 album 1989,) and being crowned Spotify’s most-streamed global artist of the year.
Not the first time Taylor been included in the year end edition of Time, in 2017 she was part of the 2017 Person of the Year collective, The Silence Breakers, a group of people who spoke out against sexual abuse and harassment, thanks to her trial against former radio DJ David Mueller.
