On Sunday (5.21) during their “Preparing Music for Concerts,” livestream, the Foo Fighters announced that renowned drummer Josh Freese will join the band full-time for their summer tour.
During the live broadcast, frontman Dave Grohl and his band promised a “few surprises” as the rock icons formally introduced Freese in a comical clip where the group is solicited by potential A-list drummers – including Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith, Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee and Tool’s Danny Carey – before confirming that the job belonged to Josh.
Filling the vacancy left by the late Taylor Hawkins, the addition of Freese was highly anticipated given his session and live experience with the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Paramore and Devo.
Leading fans to speculate that he was among the frontrunners to replace Hawkins full-time, before he canceled his summer shows with the Offspring and Danny Elfman, Freese was among the all-star drummers to perform with the Foos during their Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts in 2022,
In addition to welcoming the new drummer to their lineup, Foo Fighters’ free “Preparing Music for Concerts” livestream also introduced their listeners to new music from the band’s upcoming LP But Here We Are, that arrives June 2 and represents “the first chapter of the band’s new life.”
Traversing through North America and Europe, the forthcoming Foo Fighters tour starts on May 24 in Gilford, New Hampshire and includes performances at festivals like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Ohana, Riot Fest and Austin City Limits.
