Wearing a white hooded backless Oscar de la Renta gown with a feather train, complete with a full prosthetic feline face, Doja Cat made her presence known at the Met Gala 2023.
In support of this year’s tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, the now 27-year-old rap star paid homage to the iconic fashion designer by dressing up as his cat, Choupette, after whom he nicknamed his favorite runway models.
In a statement about her appearance the musician (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini) told red carpet host LaLa Anthony “I feel very calm and relaxed.” “I do hope to have some good conversation, have some fun and meet some cool people. ”
Though many tried to dissuade her from changing her signature look when first she decided to shave her head, Doja used the moment to explore other styles of beauty. Her shaven head, Gala-look, was covered in a bejeweled hood connected to the dress with cat ears attached to the top along with a large gem dangling on her forehead.
In a pre-statement by Vogue, the Met Gala’s dress code will honor “the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs through recurring themes across more than 65 years, from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.” This year’s co-chairs of fashion’s famous night were Spanish actor Penélope Cruz, singer Dua Lipa, actor Michaela Coel, and tennis player Roger Federer.
