The latest in an ever growing list of superstars to sell their repertoire rights, Phil Collins and his band Genesis have sold a significant portion of their back catalogue for $300,000,000.00 to the Concord Music Group that purchased the publishing rights and master recordings for the lion’s share of progressive rock / pop legends’ Genesis music.
Included in the mega-deal are the 71-year-old singer-and-drummer’s solo hits – such as ‘In the Air Tonight’, ‘You’ll Be In My Heart’ and ‘Against All Odds’ – and guitarist Mike Rutherford’s Mike and the Mechanics songs are part of the sale, as well.
In a statement about the multi-millionaire dollar deal, Concord president Bob Valentine told the Wall Street Journal: “In the world we live in today with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, all these things that drive consumption of older music, there are definitely ways for us as a record company to bring some of this music back to life.”
In March, Collins performed his final show with Genesis as the legendary hitmakers played the last night of ‘The Last Domino?’ farewell run at London’s The O2.
Due to ongoing health issues, Phil, who’s been unable to play drums and was forced to sing the majority of their set while seated, quipped about needing to “get a real job now”. Phil’s son Nic Collins, now 21, replaced his father on the drums for the jaunt.
The iconic singer/drummer has suffered from poor health since he injured a vertebrae in his upper neck while performing in 2009 and previously admitted that he can “barely” hold a drumstick in his hand. Two years later, Collins stepped back from performing due to crippling nerve damage, before returning in 2015.
While promoting his final reunion shows, Phil said: “I’m kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I’d love to be playing up there with my son.”
