Following her initial decision to opt out of the music institution’s 2022 nomination, Dolly Parton will “gracefully” accept the honor should she is inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Because she believes she hadn’t “earned that right,” in March the legendary Country music singer/songwriter decided to withdraw her name for induction into the famed music museum However, because the decision was made after the voting ballots had been solicited, Parton had to remain as a nominee.
During an interview on NPR’s Morning Edition, the ‘Jolene’ hitmaker was asked what she’ll do if voted into the Hall, to wit she simply replied, “Well, I’ll accept gracefully. And I’ll accept it because the fans vote.”
The 76-year-old music icon added that she has since learned the institution canvasses more music genres than just rock and roll, stating:
“When I said that, it was always my belief that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music.” “And I have found out lately that is not necessarily that, but if they (rock stars) can’t go there to be recognized, where do they go? I just felt like I would be taking away from someone that maybe deserved it, certainly more than me because I never considered myself a rock artist. But obviously there’s more to it than that.”
In addition to Dolly, the class of 2022 nominees include Beck, Kate Bush, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, Judas Priest, Fela Kuti, Rage Against the Machine, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, A Tribe Called Quest and Dionne Warwick, among others.
