Taking to social media with a pre-save link to ‘Follow’ along with a collage of their greatest moments together, Martin Garrix tweeted, “after being friends for over 10 years, it was about time Zedd and I released our first song together.”
A collaboration that’s an equal part of each EDM superstar, the tick of Zedd’s quintessential clock sample, Garrix and his musical collaborator rewind time to 2013-2016, as former musician recalls his old-school electro-house sound. The STMPD RCRDS head exercises his anthemic, Bayfront Park-filling progressive/big room touch that’s both nostalgic and contemporary.
Though news of “Follow” has been met with surprise, the signs pointing to this partnership seem somewhat obvious with Zedd’s guest appearance at Garrix’s 2019 Echostage date. Or, Garrix’s February 2020 interview with South Florida’s Revolution 93.5 FM, at which time the Dutchman mentioned a “crazy, weird, different” work in progress involving both himself and the True Colors album maker.
The collaboration became a reality one week after EDC Las Vegas 2021 wrapped, when both creatives posted stories of themselves working together in the studio just after Zedd brought out Garrix during his set at cosmicMEADOW. A little over two months later on March 25, “Follow” was confirmed.
