Mystery Country Man Orville Peck and American Drag Queen Trixie Mattel have teamed up for a revolutionary cover of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s “Jackson”.
On April 30th, 2021 the atypical County music duo released the video accompaniment to the song that was filmed onstage in the theatre of the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. Peck, the masked country singer, was dressed in his class frilled hat and bright colored outfit while Mattel donned her Dolly Parton inspired outfit with stunning makeup and over-the-top coiffed hair.
For years now, there’ve been social media calls for the duo to cover “Jackson”, and ‘oh’ did they deliver. Directed by Assaad Yacoub, the video shows the duo dancing around the stage, singing, flirting, and exemplifying an undeniably contagious chemistry.
In an interview with the media, Orville reflected on the cover saying, “There’s never been a greater country duo than Johnny Cash and June Carter. I think “Jackson” has remained iconic through the years because it perfectly captures the humour, storytelling and relationship between performers that every good country song should.”
The Peck/Mattel cover drops on PEG Records, a division of the Warner Music Group’s Alternative Distribution Alliance that focuses on the LGBTQIA+ society that has offered an equal opportunity platform for a number of years.
