On Friday (10.18) Sophie Ellis-Bextor followed her 2001 “Murder on the Dancefloor” hit with “Freedom of the Night.”
In a press statement about her newest club culture release, Bextor said “I have always been someone that needs music to help me recalibrate, and ‘Freedom of the Night’ is all about that feeling.” “Music as a form of release and a little bit of hedonism. I’ve always needed that energy in my life, and I know I’m not alone.” “As the song says, sometimes you need to give in to what you want.”
The first single from her forthcoming album, “Freedom of the Night” marks the start of a new era following 2023’s Hana, which she made with producer Ed Harcourt, who helped her record her two prior full lengths.
Paying homage to the original “Murder on the Dancefloor” visual, next week the UK singer will drop the music video for “Freedom of the Night,” directed by Sophie Muller
In an interview with the BBC in January of this year , Ellis-Bextor said the “Murder on the Dancefloor” resurgence felt “really magical” and “extraordinary.” “It’s a song I’ve been singing for over 20 years. I still love singing it. I love the way people react when I do it live.” “But for new people to be discovering it, for it to be making new memories with people is kind of beautiful.”
Since last years release of Hana, the Sophie’s dropped numerous remixes, edits, and live versions of “Murder on the Dancefloor,” and has also joined Felix Jaehn on the single “Ready for Your Love” and Lufthaus for “Immortal” earlier this year.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor has three remaining shows for her 2024 North American tour including Fort Lauderdale (11.12,) Orlando (11.13,) and Atlanta (11.14.)
