Sylvester’s Classic ‘You Make Me Feel …’ Receives Soulwax Remix

In celebration of Pride Month, Soulwax has produced a remix of the 1978 Sylvester Disco classic “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)”.

The 10-minute-long “Soulwax for Despacio” rendition of the classic Gay anthem adds several key elements while maintaining the essence of the original Fantasy Records release. “Unlike other remixes where we usually replace most of the elements and create something radically different based around the vocal, we made this remix using only the parts we found on the original multitrack that we were so kindly given by the Sylvester estate,” David and Stephen Dewaele of Soulwax explained.

“Even though we’ve played this song a million times,” they added, “we discovered a few elements that we hadn’t heard before, like a crazy Patrick Cowley synth solo and the ending of what sounds like a gospel version of ‘Mighty Real’ somewhere hidden before the start of the multitrack.” It was an honor to be invited to remix such a classic music, and we hope Sylvester dances to it wherever he is.”

“You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” was first published on Sylvester’s breakout sophomore album Step II. Music critic Patrick Crowley dubbed the song “the cornerstone of gay disco,” and it was added into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry in 2019 for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
