Following a comment made by Megan Moroney at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs,) Shaboozey‘s reaction went viral.
To present the award for Favorite Country Band/Duo/Group, the ‘ … Bar Song (Tipsy)’ star and the Tennessee Orange singer-songwriter took to the stage at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Las Vegas on Monday night (5.26)
Born Collins Chibueze, Shaboozey reflected on the importance of country music in AMA history, confirming that the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to Charley Pride during the first year of the show in 1974.
Reading from a teleprompter, Maroney added “That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award went to (folk music group) The Carter Family, who basically invented country music.”
As he processed Megan’s words, Shaboozey paused for a moment before frowning, doing a small eye roll in despair and then laughing before presenting the nominees in the category, ultimately won by Dan + Shay who bested Old Dominion, Parmalee, The Red Clay Strays, and Zac Brown Band.
The hitmaker’s reaction has sparked debate on social media, including:
“Megan Moroney just said the Carter Family invented country music and Shaboozey just shot her the hardest side eye. That’s what I came here for,” wrote one X user, while another added, “The Carter Family definitely shaped country, but invented? Bit of a stretch.”
Many-a-fan was quick to defend Megan, with one responding “Megan Moroney did not write the script (she was just reading the prompter),”
At press time, representatives for Shaboozey and Megan have yet to comment on the awkward moment.
