PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Hits 6B Views

The first K-pop video to reach 6,000,000,000 views on YouTube, PSY‘s ‘Gangnam Style’ reached the rare milestone almost exactly 14 years after it was posted on the streaming platform.

The very first music video in that genre to ever garner those kinds of numbers, the comedic, dance-heavy visual has now surpassed the milestone.

Followed by the likes of BTS, Blackpink, Stray Kids, Seventeen, Twice and others, PSY is widely credited as having set the stage for modern K-pop music to cross over into the global mainstream in recent years.

Directed by Cho Soo-Hyun, the music video finds the South Korean superstar (born Park Jae-sang) causing chaos with his signature choreography. Peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012, ‘Gangnam Style’ became the first upload to ever reach 1,000,000,000 YouTube views, making it an very first member of the Billion Views Club that has since been joined by Justin Bieber’s Baby, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space and Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You, among other clips.

Including BTS with their ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Butter’ hits, and Blackpink with ‘Pink Venom’ and ‘How You Like That,’ in recent years, several other K-pop artists have also entered the billion view club.

Running his own record label, P Nation, and hosting his annual high-energy Summer Swag concert series, PSY remains a big fish in the South Korean entertainment industry.
