Oscars Best Song Nominations Includes H.E.R., Leslie Odom, Jr., Diane Warren, Celeste + Will Ferrell

As the postponed Oscar Awards approach, the Academy has announced the finalists for the coveted Best Original Song category.

The nominees for Best Original Song are an eclectic mix of highbrow and lowbrow tunes, ranging in style from H.E.R.’s soulful anthem from Judas and the Black Messiah to Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams’ melodramatically hilarious track from Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. Songwriter Diane Warren, who has yet to win an Oscar, earns her 12th nomination this year for her contribution to the Italian film, The Life Ahead; she won a Golden Globe for the composition last month.

The Academy’s nominating committee refined this years selections down from a shortlist that included other songs by heavy-hitters Mary J. Blige, John Legend, and Sacha Baron Cohen (for his Borat ditty “Wuhan Flu”). Some consider the omission of Christina Aguilera’s “Loyal Brave True” from Mulan to be a snub, given that Disney films have traditionally dominated the category ever since “When You Wish Upon a Star” (?.)

To see which song wins, tune in to the Oscars on ABC at 8 PM ET on April 25th. Until then, listen to some of the selections in the running below.
