After taking home her very first Tony Award, on Sunday night (6.08) Nicole Scherzinger broke down in tears during her acceptance speech.
In recognition of her performance as Norma Desmond in the Broadway revival of Sunset Boulevard, Oprah Winfrey presented the former Pussycat Dolls-member with the Best Actress in a Musical trophy.
Overcome with emotion, Nicole praised her fellow nominees – Megan Hilty, Audra McDonald, Jasmine Amy Rogers, and Jennifer Simard, stating:
“First of all, I just have to thank God for carrying me every step of the way. I give you all the glory. Y’all know this Broadway schedule is hardcore.” “I got to keep it real… I’m so honored to be recognized alongside these exceptional warrior women in this category. I want to thank all of you.”
Acknowledging her fiancé, Thom Evans, for always believing in her, the now 46-year old singer/actress also thanked her family for their ongoing support:
“(I’m) so proud to represent. I want to thank my mom, who had me at 18 and gave everything up for me. My dad (and) my sister… who instilled in me an unshakable faith. My ohana, my family, all 5,000 of you. You know that I love you.”
Elsewhere, Scherzinger gushed over Sunset Boulevard creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Jamie Lloyd, and co-star Tom Francis.
“You saw me when no one else did.” “You’ve given us all new ways to dream, and you’ve changed my life forever. Growing up, I always felt like I didn’t belong, but you all have made me feel like I belong and I have come home at last! “So, if anyone out there who feels like they don’t belong, well, your time hasn’t come. Don’t give up. Just keep on giving and giving because the world needs your love and your light more than ever. This is a testament that love always wins. Thank you so much.”
Introduced by Glenn Close, who played the role of Desmond in the 1994 and 2017 Broadway productions, earlier in the New York ceremony, Nicole received a standing ovation for her rendition of ‘As If We Never Said Goodbye,’;
The show also won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical on the night.
