Released earlier today (11.29,) the newest episode of the “Moby Pod’ podcast by revered musician/producer/activist Moby takes the listener on a historical journey through rave culture.
From the beginning of London club The Brain (that ushered in the house and techno music that Moby admired to New York clubs in 1989), to the explosion of nights like The Limelight and Storm Rave in Brooklyn. From the black outfits of club culture to the bright, colorful aesthetic of rave culture. From club deejays hiding in the dark behind their turntables to Moby jumping around the stage with his guitar, Moby seems to have been there through it all.
Fast forward to 1994 when the deejay turned artist believed the rave scene was becoming less celebratory, Moby says “In ‘Feeling So Real’ I wanted to write a big euphoric, over the top joyful techno track.” “There was a famous disco song in the early 80’s called ‘You Make Me Feel Mighty Real’ and a band called Dream Frequency called ‘Feeling Surreal’ – and honestly, I was just borrowing from them!”
All of the above and more are addressed in the latest podcast episode between Moby and his co-host Lindsay Hicks, along with a multi-track breakdown of his new ‘Feeling So Real’ remix, and some classic dance moves from the original rave era including ‘bring in the plane’ and ‘big fish, little fish, cardboard box’.
Produced by Little Walnut, Moby’s production company, “Moby Pod” premiered in late 2022. The multi-topic podcast addresses several issues, including animal rights, climate change, creative expression, and mental health, and it has featured such diverse guests as as Hunter Biden (in one of his rare interviews), Dan Buettner, Peter Kalmus, Steve-O, and Joe Manganiello.
