Collaborating with longtime producer partner Soundtrakk, Lupe Fiasco announces his full length follow up to 2022’s Drill Music In Zionas. Scheduled for a June 28 release, Samurai features only eight tracks during a time when the lion’s share of albums include at least ten titles for streaming music platforms.
Preempting his LP, the musician (real name Wasalu Muhammad Jaco) released the title track and accompanying ‘Samurai’ video featuring “battle raps” that was shot in Chicago’s Ping Tom Memorial Park.
In a press release about his new collection Lupe stated “The word ‘samurai’ means to serve. My relationship to that word has always meant that you need to be at the service of other people, either in the overall community, or in this instance, the rap community at large that I’ve been a part of for years.” And Fiasco followers know that he practices various forms of martial arts and sometimes posts video of himself practicing kata and sword techniques.
Sharing his unique perspective on the music industry, since 2022 Lupe has also been teaching the course ‘Rap Studies’ at MIT in Cambridge, MA, and has also since been made a fellow at Yale,
‘Samurai’ is the artist’s first full length since 2007’s The Cool that Fiasco worked on with his mentor/business partner Charles “Chill” Patton who was imprisoned since 2007 and released in 2023 after 16 years.
“It felt great to be back in the studio again as a family,” the rapper noted.
