Born in New Zealand, Lorde recently opened up about her battle with food and her approach to gender.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the now 28-year old superstar singer/songwriter shed light on her eating disorder, admitting that that following Covid-19 she became obsessed with counting calories, monitoring her protein intake and starving herself.
Explaining that she experienced a contrast of emotions on and off stage, the musician (born Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor) said:
“I don’t know how those two things can be true.” “That I’m having this really amazing, rich experience of playing the shows and meeting these kids, and (yet) I’m also looking at the pictures afterward and feeling deep loathing at the sight of my beautiful, tiny tummy, thinking it was so unforgivable what I had allowed it to become.”
Having battled the condition during her 2022 and 2023 Solar Power Tour, Lorde went on to explain that she realized that by “cutting the chord” of controlling what she ate and how she viewed her body left her free to, once moire, embrace creativity.
Addressing questions over lyrics in a song from her forthcoming album that suggest there are some days that she feels male, rather than female, the singer said:
“(Chappell Roan) asked me this. She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.'” “I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up,” and describing herself as being “in the middle gender-wise”.
