After the K-pop girl group lost the lawsuit against their record label, Kesha has voiced her support NewJeans.
Following the departure of their mentor, a South Korean judge ruled against the five-piece group’s effort to break free from their label ADOR.
Though Kesha has no public connection to NewJeans, the musician voiced her support on X, writing, “My heart is with you NewJeans,” along with a heart emoji.
Because the American songstress (born Kesha Rose Sebert) went through legal battle with her record label, the Tik Tok hitmaker understands the Korean group’s position.
For some ten years since 2014, the now 38-year old artist was embroiled in lawsuits with her longtime music producer Dr. Luke, accusing him of sexual assault and emotional abuse, among other claims. The star attempted to be released from her contract with Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records label, but a judge denied her request.
In June of 2023, both parties reached a settlement before the case prior to trial, and Kesha parted ways with the producer and his record company that December, seven months after releasing her last contractual LP, Gag Order.
After the label’s CEO Min Hee-Jin was dismissed from her role and later left the company, NewJeans, band members Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein tried to void their contract with ADOR, but the judge ruled that their executive producer’s firing was not sufficient grounds to terminate their seven-year contract with ADOR. As a result they must fulfill their obligations to the company until 2029.
In response to the verdict, the female group’s attorneys said “NewJeans members respect the court’s judgment, but it is impossible to return to this company and continue normal entertainment activities in the current situation where the trust relationship with ADOR is completely shattered.”
