Breaking the record for the most streamed music video by any female recording artist, Katy Perry‘s “Roar” has secured 4,000,000,000 YouTube views.
Upon its initial 2013 release, ‘Roar’ spent two weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat Perry has since accomplished nine times in her career, including “Dark Horse” and “Unconditionally,” from her Prism LP that also topped the Billboard 200 albums chart in November of the same year.
As Katy was navigating her divorce from ex-husband Russell Brand, the singer told Billboard “I was really inspired by this little six-minute thing by Eckhart Tolle where he speaks about loss,” referring to a video from the author of the best-selling self-help book, The Power of Now, “When you lose something, all your foundations crumble-but that also leaves a big hole that’s open for something great to come through.”
At the 2024 Grammy Awards “Roar” was nominated for song of the year and best pop solo performance. The single became certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2017, making Perry the first artist to have three Diamond-certified songs in the country, following “Firework” and “Dark Horse.”
