After a member of his touring crew was killed in a crash while transporting equipment for the date, J. Cole cancelled his Sacramento performance just hours prior to showtime.
In a statement acknowledging the tragedy and announcing the concert would not proceed, on Thursday (8.27,) Golden 1 Center confirmed the news, sharing:
“Following the tragic passing of a member of the touring crew in a trucking accident this morning, J. Cole’s show scheduled for tonight, August 27, at Golden 1 Center has been canceled. Our thoughts are with the crew member’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The fatality occurred shortly after 6am on Interstate 5 in Yolo County, and according to the California Highway Patrol, the truck drifted onto the right shoulder before the driver attempted to steer back into the lane, causing the vehicle to overturn.
Though no other vehicles were involved in the cash, the Yolo County Coroner’s Office later named the victim as 66-year-old Jarlath Parkinson as the sole occupant who died at the scene.
Noting it was possible the driver had been distracted or fallen asleep, CHP Sgt David Barker said investigators had not yet determined what caused the vehicle to veer off course.
With the 41-year-old musician due to play several California stops, including two nights in Oakland this weekend, followed by shows at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on September 1 and the Intuit Dome in Inglewood on September 3, J. Cole is currently on his Fall-Off World Tour.
