Halsey Is Dominatrix In ‘Safeword’: Look + Listen

On Thursday (2.27,) Halsey will release ‘Safeword,’ her first new song in almost six months.

In preparation for the drop, the now 30-year-old alt-pop star previewed a jaw-dropping snipped of the music video where she portrays a dominatrix. Donned in a leather-studded ensemble and knee-high stiletto boots. The musician (born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane) is seen putting her foot on the throat of a man wearing a BDSM mask as she sings “You’re not the boss of me!”

Halsey’s first release since The Great Impersonator album in October, the über-talented artist feared her latest LP would be her “last one” after suffering from health issues including Lupus and a rare lymphoproliferative disorder, adding “I really thought this album would be the last one I ever made.”

The first single from her last collection was Halsey’s version of Britney Spears’ 2000 hit ‘Lucky’ that she recorded as a “coping mechanism” while she was ill. The singer spent significant hospital time receiving treatment after being diagnosed with the conditions and revealed ‘Lucky’ became one of the songs she would hum to make herself feel better.

During her interview with Paper magazine, Halsey said “I have this weird coping mechanism where, if I’m not dealing with something internally, I’ll catch myself singing a song that relates to it. Often, the most random songs gets suck in my head …” “‘Lucky’ became one of those songs. I would lay there, attached to a pump, like ‘I’m so lucky, I’m a star.’ It was facetious … “

Scheduled to launch her ‘Halsey: For My Last Trick’ North American tour, the concert schedule kicks off on May 10 in Concord, California, and will finish on July 6 in Highland, California where she’ll be joined by a host of special guests, including Evanescence, Alvvays, Hope Tala, flowerlove, and others.
