On Saturday morning (3.15,) during a surprise gig in New Orleans, Ed Sheeran performed ‘Azizam,’ his new song.
According to footage obtained by local broadcaster WWLTV, the superstar singer/songwriter jumped out of a black vehicle in the middle of the city’s French Quarter. Donned in a tie-dye T-shirt and blue trousers and accompanied by brass band The Soul Rebels, the UK icon carried a portable amp and mic and proceeded to launch into his new single. And telling the outdoor crowd that it was the first time he had performed the song publicly, he said:
“We’re gonna do one song here – we’re filming a bit of content – and then we’re going to do a parade and walk down and play some songs, if you want to come with us,” he said, per local news website Nola.com. “I’ve got a new song coming in a couple weeks that no one’s heard. This will be the first time it’s ever been played live. We’ll play it once now and then we’ll walk down, play some songs that you know, and I’ll play this song again. Thanks for coming out. It’s nice to be back here.”
Following the unexpected performance, Sheeran took to Instagram with a short clip of the footage along with the caption “Playing some new music today on the streets of New Orleans with @thesoulrebels thanks to everyone who turned up!”
Not the first time the 34-year old musician surprised fans, in February Ed attempted to perform on a street in Bengaluru, India – but it was quickly shut down by authorities.
Though he’s yet to announce the single’s drop date, in September 2024, Sheeran released his seventh studio album, Autumn Variations.
