Having opted to abandon his musical alter-ego, Donald Glover explained the decision to retire his “Childish Gambino” persona.
Admitting that he no longer finds his stage name fulfilling, the superstar actor/singer realized that it was simply “done”.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, the now 40-year old entertainer said “It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done.’ It’s not fulfilling.” “And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.”
Stating that when he initially became active in music, it was difficult to find a likeminded Black community with the same interests. “I remember going to an N.E.R.D. show with my girlfriend and we were the only two Black people there.” “I feel like I was just looking around like, ‘Where is everyone? Am I an alien?'” added Glover.
No longer interested in being the coolest person in the industry, the thespian/singer revealed that he’s now more concerned about having a true connection with his sons, Legend, 8, Drake, 6 and Donald Jr, 4,
“I think grace is undervalued in the world.” “When I put my son on my shoulders, I feel deep joy. That’s real. No one on their deathbed is going to look back and say, ‘Thank God I avoided being cringe'” said the artist formerly known as Childish Gambino.
