Demi Lovato’s Addresses Health Issues

On Wednesday (10.22,) Demi Lovato opened up about their decision to address about past experiences with mental health issues, eating disorders, and substance abuse, during the latest episode of the Las Culturistas podcast co-hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

Recalling how she felt a “responsibility” to go public with her health struggles as a young woman, the superstar singer/songwriter explained how she made the decision after entering a treatment program when she was 18.

Following a 2010 incident where she punched backup dancer Alex Welch while on tour with the Jonas Brothers, Lovato said:

“I had a decision that had to be made when I had gone to treatment for the first time.” “I had this very public outburst when I was 18… and in that moment, my manager at the time asked me, like, ‘Do you want to be public with what you’re going through, or do you want to sweep it under the rug and not talk about it?'”

Opting to be honest with her fans, the now 33-year old songstress added:

“I was like, ‘I didn’t have a role model at 13 that was speaking up about eating disorders, and I need to be that role model for someone else.’ It was this responsibility that I was willing to take on because I wish that I could have had that growing up.”

On Friday (10.24,) Demi Lovato will release her ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep.
