During last night’s (5.16) Academy of Country Music Awards, Dua Lipa took the audience by surprise when when she performed with Chris Stapleton.
Held at the Ford Theater at the Star in Frisco, Texas, the pop superstar made an unexpected appearance at the country music show singing the country musician’s ‘Think I’m in Love With You’ before Chris hit the stage and joined Dua for a duet.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Lipa confirmed that she reached out to Stapleton about a live collaboration because she is “a massive fan” of his. The 28-year-old Albanian/British songstress said it was “absolutely incredible” spending a few days working with Chris and his band and “brainstorming ideas on how we can reimagine the song”. And, about keeping the duet a secret, the chanteuse added, “I think we were all so in on making sure this stays a surprise, to make the moment even more special. I don’t know how we did it (but) I’m glad we did it because it was really special when it happened tonight on stage. It’s always fun like that.”
Nabbing three awards – including Artist-Songwriter of the Year, Male Artist of the Year and Album of the Year for Higher – Stapleton had a massive night at the 2024 ACM Awards. Chris’ wins matched Lainey Wilson’s accolade total when she took home trophies for Entertainer of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Music Event of the Year for Save Me (with Jelly Roll.)
Not the only non-country to sing at the ceremony, Post Malone debuted a new country song prior to his performing his current hit ‘I Had Some Help’ and performing a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s ‘Ramblin’ Man’ with the show’s host Reba McEntire. In addition, Avril Lavigne joined Nate Smith for the live debut of their collaboration ‘Bulletproof.’
