Chappell Roan Defends Grammy Outfit

In defense of the controversial outfit she donned at the 2026 Grammy Awards, Chappell Roan turned heads at LA’s Crypto.com Arena on Sunday night (2.01) when she walked the red carpet in a custom-made Mugler dress and cape, draped from nipple rings.

Taking to her Instagram account the following day, the 2025 Grammy award winner insisted she didn’t know what all the online fuss was about, writing “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit.”: “The look’s actually so awesome and weird. I recommend just exercising your free will it’s really fun and silly.”

Wearing a tan chiffon Grecian-style gown for the ceremony, the singer/songwriter (born Kayleigh Amstutz,) presented Olivia Dean with the Best New Artist trophy, adding “Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”

Inspired by Manfred Thierry Mugler’s spring-summer 1998 couture collection, in her own post, fashion stylist Genesis Webb explained that she had tapped designer Miguel Castro Freitas to make the 27-year old’s outfit. And noting that Chappell was wearing prosthetic nipple pasties and faux tattoos for the night, created by make-up artist Sasha Glasser, she declared “This isn’t casual. They’re prosthetics, don’t take it down !!”

Though Roan was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her single, ‘The Subway,’ she came away empty-handed.
