After its CEO, Casey Wasserman, faced renewed scrutiny over emails he exchanged with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell more than twenty years ago, Chappell Roan has formally ended her relationship with the talent agency.
Stating that she could no longer remain represented by Wasserman, the company that bears his name, on Monday (2.09,) the Grammy award winner took to her Instagram Stories on Monday (2.09,) to announce her decision.
Rooted in her commitment to ethical leadership and the well-being of the people who work within her professional circle, the superstar singer/songwriter wrote:
“As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman.” “I hold my teams to the highest standards and have a duty to protect them as well. No artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict so deeply with our own moral values.”
The 27- year old musician’s decision arrives concurrent with public pushback directed at Wasserman after old emails between him and Maxwell resurfaced online, prompting widespread criticism and calls for accountability. While the correspondence dates back more than two decades, the renewed attention has placed pressure on the agency and its leadership.
Making it her clear that her decision was not a condemnation of the agents and staff who had supported her career, but a stand against leadership she felt no longer aligned with her values, Roan added:
“I have deep respect and appreciation for the agents and staff who work tirelessly for their artists and I refuse to passively stand by.” “Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity. This decision reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust.”
The Missouri native songstress has always been outspoken on issues of safety, equality and artist empowerment in the music business, and as of press time, Wasserman has not publicly responded to Roan’s announcement.
