Headed to the Great White Way this summer is “Once Upon a One More Time,” a stage musical about woke princesses that features hit songs by Britney Spears.
Including such Spears’ classics as “Oops!… I Did It Again,” “Lucky,” “Stronger” and “Toxic,” performances begin in May at the Marquis Theatre.
Penned by Jon Hartmere, the theme of the show is the about such classic fairy tale princesse as Cinderella, Snow White and Little Mermaid, who are transformed after reading “The Feminine Mystique,” a landmark feminist text.
Not the first show to feature popular songs to fuel a musical is an old one, recent theatrical successes in this space include classic repertoire by The Temptations, Bob Dylan, The Go Go’s, Tina Turner and Alanis Morissette. And many of Spears’ hits are in “& Juliet” – a jukebox musical currently on Broadway that celebrates one of her writing partners and producers, Max Martin who penned her “… Baby One More Time” and “Stronger.”
Famous for its more stately offerings, “Once Upon a One More Time” first played at The Shakespeare Theatre Company and the Broadway iteration will be directed and choreographed by Keone and Mari Madrid with the cast will be announced at a later date.
