Several months after being released from a nearly 14-year conservatorship, Britney Spears has made her official return to music with “Hold Me Closer,” a disco-tinged, re-make of several Elton John classics.
Britney’s first new music since her 2016 album, Glory, ‘Hold Me …’ opens with the two icons singing “The One” over a dance rhythm, before Spears breaks into “Tiny Dancer” during the chorus. “Hold me closer, tiny dancer/Count the headlights on the highway,” sings the chanteuse, interwoven with John’s “The One,” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” and “Tiny Dancer” into a club-ready mix. “Lay me down in sheets of linen/You had a busy day today.”
Before reaching out to Spears with the idea of turning the single into a collaboration, the project originally started as a solo effort for Sir Elton. According to a press release Spears “immediately said yes,” and John stated “I am absolutely thrilled to have had the chance to work with Britney Spears,” “She truly is an icon, one of the all-time great pop stars and she sounds amazing on this record. I love her dearly and am delighted with what we’ve created together.”
