Two months after ebing admitted to a Portugal hospital for emergency surgery, on Wednesday (7.08) Bonnie Tyler passed away at the age of 75.
Taking to her official website on Thursday (7.09,) the news read “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.” “We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
The Welsh-born songstress fell ill and was taken to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal, and underwent emergency intestinal surgery on May 6 where she was later placed in an induced coma.
Stating that she was out of the coma but remained “very unwell and in intensive care,” in June, Tyler’s spokesperson updated fans.
Best known for her power ballad ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart,’ that topped the US and UK charts in 1983, and surpassing 1,000,000,000 streams on Spotify earlier this year, the superstar singer (born Gaynor Hopkins) was also known for songs such as ‘Lost in France,’ ‘More Than a Lover’ and Holding Out for a Hero,’ which she recorded for the Footloose soundtrack in 1984.
Performing ‘Believe In Me,’ Bonnie represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013.
Throughout her career, the Tyler received three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nods, and was presented with an MBE for her services to music in 2022.
In 1973, Tyler married Olympic judo competitor-turned-property developer Robert Sullivan.
