In a lyric that that reflects the vibe and tension of Black Star’s Saturday Night Live debut, “Walk soft and carry a cro magnum,” rapped Yasiin Bey during the duo’s first song “So Be It.”
New York’s own rap duo, Talib Kweli and Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) received a hero’s welcome in Studio 8H by the audience and the show’s MC Dave Chappelle (who also co-hosts The Midnight Miracle podcast with both Kweli and Bey) who introduced them as “Brooklyn’s finest rappers.”
Black Star performed two new songs, “The Main Thing Is To Keep The Main Thing The Main Thing” and “So Be It,” during which time they brought out Madlib, who produced every track on their new LP No Fear of Time. The album is Black Star’s first in 24 years since their influential 1998 debut Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.
