Incorporated in the newest NFL commercial is Beck‘s version of the Neil Young classic, “Old Man.”
Preempting the covers official 9.26 release, the redone classic was featured in a promotional spot for next Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The “Old Man” reference pertains to the Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady (now 45), while the Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, at just 27, is comparatively a young man.
Adding to the Neil Young’s original version is the lyric, “Old man, look at my life/24 and there’s so much more,” as both Brady and Mahomes were 24 year old when they won their first Super Bowl rings.
In his new version Beck (born Bek David Campbell) goes the faithful-to-the-original route, using just an acoustic guitar while adding his own touch by layering his vocals into big, rich harmonies during the chorus.
