On the one year anniversary of Tony Bennett‘s passing, Lady Gaga paid tribute to her late friend and collaborator.
Now 38-years old, the contemporary pop superstar and the legendary jazz crooner became friends after meeting in 2011 and in 2014 the musical duo collaborated on Cheek to Cheek. an album of duets.
So close were the musical icons that Bennett’s final two performances were with Gaga at two Radio City Music Hall concerts in August 2021 in honor of his 95th birthday.
Paying homage to the legendary Italian singer (born Anthony Dominick Benedetto,) Gaga shared a black and white photo of herself with Bennett on Instagram with the caption “It’s been one year since Tony passed away. This picture says it all.” Adjacent to the image of Lady (born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta,) in a ballgown with her hand on her heart and he, in a tuxedo, sketched a portrait of her, she added “I’m so grateful for my continued friendship with his wife Susan – the legacy of jazz music he left – and for the community of jazz musicians I still work with who all knew and loved Tony. We’re gonna keep on swingin’. Miss you. Life is a beautiful thing.” The sketch was featured on the cover of the duo’s 2021 follow-up to Cheek to Cheek, Love for Sale.
Following a protracted battle with Alzheimer’s, Tony Bennett died on June 21, 2023 at the age of 96.
